
Ida Kavafian enjoys an international reputation as one of the most versatile musicians performing today. With a repertoire as diverse as her talents, Ms. Kavafian has electrified recital and orchestral stages nationally and internationally. She is Music From Angel Fire Artistic Director, was a member of the Beaux Arts Trio and is an artist member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.
Jeffrey Swann's solo, chamber music and orchestral piano career has taken him around the globe collaborating with many of the world's finest conductors and chamber musicians.
Ida Kavafian's commitment to contemporary music has led to many world premieres by composers as varied as Toru Takemitsu and Michael Daugherty, who wrote concertos for her, and jazz greats Chick Corea and Wynton Marsalis, the noted Bluegrass Composer/Fiddler, all with whom she has toured and recorded.
Since her founding membership in the innovative group TASHI in the 1970’s, Ms. Kavafian’s chamber music appearances have included many renowned festivals and series throughout the world. She has toured and recorded with the Guarneri, Orion and American Quartets as well as the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, of which she is an Artist Member. She and her sister Ani continue to perform together regularly in recital and with major orchestras. Their television credits together include features on CBS Sunday Morning and NBC’s Today Show, and they have recorded for Nonesuch. Ms. Kavafian was the violinist of the legendary Beaux Arts Trio for six years. Some of their honors during her tenure included being named “Ensemble of the Year” by Musical America in 1997 and a 1998 Grammy nomination. More recently, she co-founded the exciting ensemble, OPUS ONE, along with pianist Anne-Marie McDermott, violist Steven Tenenbom and cellist Peter Wiley.
For 25 years, Ida Kavafian has been the Artistic Director of Music from Angel Fire. She also founded and guided Bravo! Colorado in Vail as music director for 10 years, building it into one of the leading festivals in the country. As an educator, she is on the faculty of the Curtis Institute and the Conservatory of Music at Bard College, and has given Master Classes at various Universities and Conservatories around the world. She has also served on numerous competition juries and boards.
Ms. Kavafian resides in Connecticut and Philadelphia, where she and her husband, violist Steven Tenenbom, can be found passionately pursuing their hobby of breeding, training and showing prize winning champion Hungarian Vizsla dogs under the kennel name, “Opus One Vizslas”. Even in this field, Ms. Kavafian has enjoyed great success, having bred, trained and owned the Number One Vizsla All Systems in the US for the year 2003 as well as the 2007 National Champion.
Jeffrey Swann enjoys an international performing career which has taken him throughout the United States, Europe, Latin America and Asia. He won first prize in the Dino Ciani Competition sponsored by La Scala in Milan, a gold medal at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, and top honors at the Warsaw Chopin, Van Cliburn, Vianna da Motta and Montreal Competitions, as well as the Young Concert Artists auditions in New York City. His large and varied repertoire includes more than 60 concertos as well as solo works ranging from Bach to Boulez.
In addition to presenting lecture/recitals worldwide, Mr. Swann has performed with the symphonies of Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Indiana, Dallas, Saint Louis, Phoenix, Houston, Lexington, Baltimore and Minneapolis; and in Europe with the orchestras of Rotterdam, The Hague, Belgian National and Radio, Santa Cecilia, La Scala, Maggio Fiorentino (Florence), RAI Turin and Rome, Südwest Rundfunk, Bayerischer Rundfunk, the Prague Philharmonic, Radio France de Montpellier, and the London Philharmonia, among many others. He has performed with conductors Zdenek Macal, David Robertson, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Marek Janowski, Kazimirz Kord, Myung-Whun Chung, Roberto Abbado, Riccardo Chailly, Daniele Gatti and Leonard Slatkin. In addition, he continues to lecture regularly at the Wagner Festival in Bayreuth, Germany, and at Wagner Societies in the United States and Italy. Mr. Swann has also served as a judge at many competitions, most recently at the Utrecht International Liszt Competition.
A native of Northern Arizona, Jeffrey Swann studied with Alexander Uninsky at Southern Methodist University and with Beveridge Webster and Adele Marcus at The Juilliard School, where he received his B.M., M.M. and D.M.A. Degrees.
Since 2007 Jeffrey Swann has been Artistic Director of the Dino Ciani Festival & Academy in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. Since 2008 he has been the Adel Artist-in-Residence at Northern Arizona University, and in the Fall of 2010 will join the faculty as Professor of Piano at New York University.
