Canellakis Duo with Roman Rabinovich, piano

The distinguished brother and sister duo, violinist Karina and cellist Nicholas, will be joined by Roman Rabinovich, the winner of the 2008 Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition, for eight free and fee-based events including three in-school Concerts for Youth in the first of three four-day residencies as CMS Artists in Residence planned for the 10-11 Season.

Karina Canellakis has been hailed for the passion and depth of emotion she brings to her performances, whether as soloist, chamber musician, or conductor.  She has been praised for her “big, lustrous tone” and “power and expressiveness” (Philadelphia Inquirer), as “exceptionally imaginative…pushing the technical limits of her instrument” (Beverly Hills Outlook, Los Angeles), and her performance as “thrilling music-making” (New York Sun).

In the 2009-10 season, Ms.Canellakis' performances include a National US Tour with Musicians from Marlboro, and a series of concerts as soloist with the Hartford Symphony, performing Saint-SaÎns Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso and a debut arrangement of Ives' violin sonatas for violin and orchestra.  She returns as soloist with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Michoacan in Mexico, playing both Beethoven Romances and the Saint-SaÎns.

Ms. Canellakis played regularly in the Berlin Philharmonic for two years as a member of the Karajan Academy, and has performed on tour with the orchestra in Europe, Asia, and the United States, under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle.

She has performed in the Marlboro Fesitval, BargeMusic, Music From Angel Fire, Taos, Aspen, Verbier, St.Barths, Zermatt, Chicago Chamber Musicians, Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Italy, and Isaac Stern's International Jerusalem Chamber Music Encounters in Israel.  She has performed in prestigious venues such as the Philharmonie in Berlin, Alice Tully Hall, and the Kennedy Center.

Ms.Canellakis began playing as soloist with orchestra at the age of 12 and has since appeared with orchestras including the Hartford Symphony, Orquesta Sinfonica de Michoacan, Cincinatti Chamber Orchestra, Haddonfield Symphony, Pittsburgh Youth Symphony, Westmoreland Symphony, and the Curtis Chamber Orchestra on tour in Japan.

Ms.Canellakis graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music, where she studied with Ida Kavafian and Jaime Laredo.  She subsequently studied with Donald Weilerstein and Ronald Copes at the Juilliard School as the recipient of the C.V.Starr Scholarship.

Nicholas Canellakis continues to receive critical recognition for his performances. In The New York Times, his playing was praised as "impassioned," with "the audience seduced by Mr. Canellakis' rich, alluring tone." He has performed at the festivals of Santa Fe, Ravinia, Music@Menlo, Sarasota, Verbier, Aspen, and Music from Angel Fire and has concertized in venues such as Alice Tully Hall, the Kennedy Center, Jordan Hall, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. He is a Fellow in The Academy- a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and the Weill Institute. As a member of the Ensemble ACJW, he performs throughout New York and teaches in collaboration with the New York City Department of Education. He is a founding member of the Vertigo String Quartet, which received first prize in the Musicatri International Competition in Italy in 2006. Last season the quartet was in residence at Bargemusic and made its New York debut on the New School concert series. Mr. Canellakis graduated from The Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied with Orlando Cole and Peter Wiley. He holds a master's degree from the New England Conservatory, where he worked with Paul Katz and was the recipient of the Gregor Piatigorsky Award. A top prizewinner in the Johansen International Competition in Washington, DC, he has been principal cellist of the New York String Orchestra and the Haddonfield Symphony.

Israeli pianist Roman Rabinovich is the winner of the 2008 Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition. Roman was already praised by critics for the "vivacity and virtuosity" and "the impeccable clarity of execution" and has performed throughout the United States, Europe and Israel in such prestigious venues as Leipzig's Gewandhaus, Wigmore Hall, Carnegie's Weill Hall, the Metropolitan Museum, the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory and Glazunov Hall in St. Petersburg, as well as on the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series in Chicago, Salle Cortot in Paris and in the Millennium Stage of the Kennedy Center in Washington DC.  At age 10 he made his Israel Philharmonic Orchestra debut under the baton of Zubin Mehta, and performed with that orchestra and Maestro Mehta again in 1999 and 2003. He has performed as a soloist with most Israeli orchestras, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (NY), Ann Arbor Symphony (MI), Delaware symphony (DE), Ashland Symphony (OH), Neuchatel Chamber Orchestra (Switzerland), Moscow Conservatory Chamber orchestra and many others. He is a winner of the top prize and four additional awards, including the prestigious Mezzo Award at the 12th Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition in Israel.
